Smoke Detectors
For your safety and protection it’s very important to have at least one smoke detector installed on every level of your home. This installation can save your life if a fire breaks out in your home. In case of such incident, the smoke detector will detect smoke and sound an alarm to warn you of danger. This alert will give you and your family time to exit to safety and call 911 for help.
There are two types of smoke detectors. One has wiring that is connected to a fire alarm. The other system is considered a smoke detector that will set off an alarm and may flash to warn you of danger.
Smoke detectors are normally a small round disk-like plastic detector that is battery operated and is installed on the ceiling of the rooms you want them, such as the kitchen and each of your bedrooms or right outside the bedrooms in the hallway. If you have an attic, it’s also a good idea to have a smoke detector there. If you live in a split level home, be sure to have a smoke detector installed on each level of your home. Smoke detectors are designed to have a high sensitivity to detect smoke. A smoke detector can be wired into a fire alarm system and it is advised to use a battery as a back up so if the electricity goes out, it will still be battery operated.
If you have a battery installed in your smoke detector, it is advised to change the battery at least every 6 months and check it each month to be sure it is still working. It is suggested to change the battery in your smoke detector in the fall when we move our clocks back for standard time and in the spring when we move our clocks ahead for daylight savings time because this is an easy way to remember when you last changed the battery and when to change it again.
If you are building a new house or putting an addition on your home, check with the building inspectors and local fire marshals for their suggestions on where to place your smoke detectors. Check with the local law requirements on smoke detectors and fire alarms in your home for the best protection for your family and your home.
