3) Installation Team

Typically a licensed electrician and maybe also a licensed plumber will be needed to install a standby generator. The best approach is to select a reputable company with a solid track record of standby generator installation. There may be a generator brand that is familiar to you, but you should talk to your electrician and get a recommendation based on experience.

4) Generator Location

Ideally the generator location should allow easy access for repair and maintenance. In addition, it should be set on a foundation higher than anticipated flood waters. Rooftop and outdoor locations will need to meet requirements setting a minimum distance from combustible walls and building openings for code compliance. Indoor generator installations must meet requirements regarding ventilation, exhaust ducting, fuel supply, and distance from combustible materials. In general, a standby generator should be placed near its fuel supply and transfer switch.

5) Outdoor Enclosure

Some locales regulate the noise level of standby generators, which limits the number of decibels in relation to the nearest properly line. When this is a requirement in an area, the sound level requirement will determine the generator enclosure needed. It is common for residential or light commercial generators to be supplied with a sound attenuated enclosure. However, industrial grade fuel supply generators usually provide several types of enclosures, from standard weather to custom packages that comply with stringent regulations.

6) Voltage Requirement

Typical low voltages for USA are 120/240 volts single phase, 120/208 volts three phase, 120/240 volts three phase, and 277/480 volts three phase. Discuss what is applicable with the licensed electrician handling the installation of your standby generator.
